Lawrence Pulley Obituary

Lawrence Edward Pulley was born on March 22, 1940, in Kilmichael, Mississippi, to the late William Mack Pulley Sr. and Lucille (Fair) Pulley. He was the third born of nine children (two of whom died at childbirth). His family faced humble beginnings as sharecroppers however his parents instilled in him faith in God and the importance of hard work. Lawrence possessed an exceptional work ethic; He not only picked cotton (300lb bales per day, exceeding EVERYONE), but also contributed to the construction of the beautiful bypasses in Mississippi. Lawrence accepted Christ at a young age and attended Traveler's Rest Missionary Baptist Church with his family. He completed his primary education at Elliot Elementary school and graduated from Elzy High School. He also obtained a black belt in Karate. In the late 1960s, he met Almatee (Alberta) Moore and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they married. As a couple they became members of Christ Temple M. B. Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Earl R. Brewer where Lawrence served as a Deacon and sang in the gospel choir. They later joined United M. B. Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Karious McDaniel where he sang in the male chorus and continued to serve as a Deacon until he chose to resign. In 1976, Lawrence and Almatee (Alberta) divorced. No biological children were born to this union; however, they adopted a son and daughter. Lawrence worked at Master Metal until he was made to retire due to lead poisoning. Despite this setback, he remained active in various jobs including landscaping and working at Walmart. In his spare time, he dedicated himself to looking after and ensuring reliable transportation for his sisters Gloria and Alberta, as well as his nieces until his health declined. On April 5, 2024, God called Lawrence home to eternal rest. Lawrence is preceded in death by both parents, two sisters: Lillian (Pulley) Marcus, Gloria Jean (Pulley) Carter, and two brothers: William M. Pulley Jr & Cedell Pulley. He is survived by one brother Jappie L. Pulley (Kathryn) and One Sister: W. Alberta (Pulley) Hammond all of Cleveland, Ohio and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Lawrence Pulley was an awesome son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. We will miss his gentle and kind nature, his laughter, his husky greeting of “Hey!” his coming-of-age stories of growing up in Mississippi, and him singing his favorite song with FULL conviction, “I’m Going Through”. Until We Meet Again. We Love you. Take your rest… You deserve it!
