Obituary
Sarah L. Butts was born November 9, 1933 in Birmingham, AL to Estelle Gray and William Asberry who both preceded her in death. Born an only child, she adopted her best friends, Pearl Burks and Dicie Bass as her sisters.
Sarah’s family moved to Cleveland, OH when she was six years old. There, she attended Olivet Institutional Baptist Church and later Eastview Christian Church. At the time of her death, Sarah was a member of All Saints Church.
Sarah married the love of her life who preceded her in death, Robert W. Butts on June 4, 1955. They were married 50 years and blessed with six children: Michael A. (deceased), Terri E. Kyle (Aaron), Robert W. Jr., Jerri I. Garrett, Stephen E., and Carla L.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A gentle, kind, and quiet spirit, Sarah always made time to engage with each of her grandchildren and impart her wisdom upon them.
Affectionately known as “Fats” by Bobby, Sarah enjoyed baking, cooking and being surrounded by her family. Sundays at the Butts household were lively and filled with sweet aromas from the kitchen and the laughter of family and friends. People came from miles around to enjoy her homemade rolls, apple squares, sweet potato pie, pound cakes and peach cobbler. Sarah also enjoyed traveling with Bobby as a member of The Weekenders. Las Vegas was one of her favorite destinations and she was a fan of cruises.
Sarah attended Cleveland Public Schools and graduated from John Hay High School. After graduation, she worked at The Forum and later Halle Brothers Company as the Head Chef.
Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert W. Butts, and her son Michael A. Butts. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
