VERA ALMA HUTCHINGSON, affectionately known as “Nana” was born on August 20, 1918 in Valdosta Georgia. Vera grew up the 2nd oldest of 6 children, there she was taught that family holds a strong bond and taught as the oldest girl to always keep the family together.

Upon coming to Cleveland Ohio, Vera confessed her faith in Christ and joined St. James A.M.E. Church, she later met her true love the late Rufus Marion Prior and on September 12, 1947, Vera and Rufus was joined in holy matrimony at St. James A.M.E. by the late Rev. Joseph Gomez.

VERA had a sweet kind quiet spirit and was a woman of very few words, but when she spoke it was with love, authority and wisdom. Vera enjoyed sewing, cooking and took special pride in her bake goods, with that special combination added with the love of the Lord, made her family and friends look up to her. Vera enjoyed hosting family gatherings, with the love of cooking, alongside her sisters made holidays very special occasions that the family always looked forward to. Vera and her husband loved to travel, he would take her on a honeymoon every year for their wedding anniversary, traveling the entire United States.

VERA was a member of the St. James A.M.E. Senior Usher Board where she served as president, she was also an active member of the international Ushers Association. Vera retired from the Standard Knitting Mill where she also served as union represented for many years.

On June 11, 2019 after 100 years of serving the Lord Vera received her wings. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Rufus Marion Prior and her daughter Arnia Sanders.
