Obituary
In Loving Memory of Andre Darnell English Sr.
Andre Darnell English Sr. was born on November 6, 1956, in East Beckley, West Virginia. He was the second eldest child born to Albert Robert English and Betty Jean Stoval. At the age of eight, Andre relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was lovingly raised by his father and mother, Marion English.
Andre attended Cleveland Public Schools and, at just 16 years old, proudly enlisted in the United States Army. During his military service, he earned his GED and had the opportunity to travel to Germany—an experience that broadened his world and strengthened his sense of discipline and responsibility. After completing his service, Andre returned home to Cleveland and began a long and dedicated career with LTV Steel, working as a railroad conductor and engineer. He retired after 27 years of faithful service.
Andre was the true definition of a humble servant. He lived a life rooted in giving—never seeking recognition or reward. Whether through a grand gesture or a quiet act of kindness, Andre believed that the highest calling was to uplift others. He was always the first to lend a helping hand and the last to take credit, finding joy simply in seeing others happy. To Andre, love was not merely spoken—it was shown through daily actions.
Even in his final days, Andre’s selfless nature never wavered. He faced the end of his earthly journey with grace, dignity, and unwavering concern for the hearts of those he loved. More than anything, he wanted his family to feel comforted, cared for, and supported. He asked for nothing in return for a lifetime of service, giving freely until the very end.
Andre’s legacy of love lives on through his devoted family. He is survived by his children: Sharnita McDade, Tierra (John) Phillips, Tia Gilmore, Andre English Jr., and Deandre Johnson, all of whom proudly carry forward his spirit of compassion. He was a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to 2 great-grandchildren, each a source of immense pride and joy. Andre also leaves to cherish his memory his devoted lifelong partner to the end Michelle Johnson.
He is also survived by his siblings: Barbara English, Jacqueline Jordan, Rhonda Nelson, Bradford (Maria) English, Lazerek (Shafonda) English, Marvin (Regina) Watts, Reginald English, and Timothy (Alta) English.
Andre was preceded in death by his parents, Albert English, Betty Stoval, and Marion English; and his siblings: Debbie (Leonard) Johnson, Lezetta Simpson, Robert English, Sally Matthews-Plummer (Clifford), and Steven English.
Andre Darnell English Sr. departed this life just as he lived it—with a gentle spirit, quiet strength, and an unwavering concern for others. He was a man who provided comfort, guidance, and a safe space for all who knew him. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love a legacy that will endure forever.
