Anthony Brown Obituary

Jagade’s Journey

Anthony Jagade “Jay” Brown danced to the rhythm of his own drums, a beat that resonated with love, faith, and wisdom. Born on February 11, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio, Jay's life was a symphony of joyous moments and accomplishments that crescendoed into a legacy that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. On January 24, 2025, Jay played his final note, leaving behind a melody of memories that will continue to inspire and uplift.

Jay was the eldest son of Donna Brown and the late Aljoe Brown. His life was a testament to his parents' love and the values they instilled in him. Although his marriages to Deborah Brown and Beverly Fitch ended, love and respect remained, fostering a family that continued to grow and thrive. His children, Antonio (Mari), Zellauteena (Walter), Nikalaus (Trenè), Joseph, Gregory (Renada), Stephan, Geoffry, Maleke, and Jeremiah, were the pride and joy of his life, each a unique note in the beautiful harmony of his world. His siblings, Yul, Cadarrow, Kimberlee (Tony), Giovanni, and Carezza, will carry forward the memories of their dear brother, as will a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews who adored him.

Jay's passion for music was undeniable. Known as the "Baddest Drummer in Cleveland," he was not just a musician; he was a writer and producer. He was the only Black drummer in the city who majored in double bass theory, a testament to his dedication and skill. Jay's talent transcended genres as he played in numerous bands, bringing his signature style to every performance. His music was not just heard; it was felt, touching the souls of all who listened. As a cross-country trucker, Jay found his second stage, with the open road providing the backdrop for his many solos. His life on the road was like a grand tour, with each destination offering a new audience for his stories and wisdom.

Beyond the stage, Jay's interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm. He relished the latest toys and gadgets, finding joy in the simple pleasures of innovation and design. Luxury cars were not just vehicles to Jay; they were extensions of his personality—sleek, powerful, and full of character. His home theater system, with its full surround sound, was his sanctuary, a place where he could immerse himself in the stories and music he loved.

Jay was also a man of deep faith and intellect. Known for engaging in spirited debates about the Bible, he approached each discussion with an open heart and an open mind. His wisdom shined through in these moments, as he sought to understand and to be understood, always with the goal of finding common ground.

Family events were the highlight of Jay's life. He cherished the times when he could gather with his loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and the occasional drum solo. These gatherings were a source of strength and joy for Jay, a time to reconnect and reaffirm the bonds that held his family together.

To describe Jay as wise, loving, and faith-filled is to capture only a glimpse of the man he was. His wisdom was a beacon for those seeking guidance; his love, a warm embrace for those in need; his faith, a solid rock upon which he built his life. Jay embodied these virtues in every aspect of his existence, and in doing so, he became a role model for all who knew him.

As we celebrate the life of Anthony Jagade “Jay” Brown, let us not dwell on the silence left in his absence. Instead, let us find comfort in the rhythm of our own lives, inspired by the memories he gave us, the lessons he taught us, and the love he shared with us. Jay's life was a masterpiece, and though the artist has departed, his work will continue to inspire generations to come.

Let us all strive to live with the same passion, joy, and authenticity that Jay did. Let his life be a reminder that every day is a chance to play our own unique song, to make a difference, and to leave the world a little more harmonious than we found it.

Farewell, Jay. Your beat goes on.
