Beatrice Spoon

Beatrice Spoon, lovingly known as a kind, gentle, and deeply loving woman, was born on February 3, 1939, in Greenville, Alabama, and passed away on June 26, 2026, in Euclid, Ohio, after suffering a massive brain bleed.

Beatrice lived a life that was rich in love, laughter, rhythm, and the kind of everyday grace that made people feel better just by being near her.  She carried herself with warmth and quiet strength, and she had that rare gift of making ordinary moments feel special. She was the sort of person who could tell you the truth, serve you a plate, and make you feel blessed all at the same time.

She was born in Greenville, Alabama, and carried her Southern roots with pride all of her life. Those roots showed up in the way she lived, the way she loved, and the way she fed people.  Her most requested dishes from family and friends were her homemade cornbread, collard greens, and fried chicken, which was fitting for a woman who knew that good food and good company could solve a great many problems.  Beatrice was truly a girl from the South, and she never forgot where she came from.  Her home, her table, and her heart all reflected the values she learned early in life.

Beatrice attended John Hay High School, and while education was a part of her story, her greatest accomplishments were never measured by a diploma or a secular title. When asked about her proudest achievements, she would speak of being a wife, homemaker, mother, and grandmother.  That was Beatrice in a nutshell, though she was much too full of life to fit neatly inside one.  She understood that a strong home was built on love, patience, humor, and the ability to keep going even when the day was long and the laundry was longer.  She made the work of caring for others look like an art form, and she did it with grace that never asked for applause.

Her family was the center of her world, and she loved them fiercely.  She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Mandy Fails, sisters, Stella, Velma, Edna, Annie Mae and brothers James and Riley.  She is survived by her husband of 69 years James Thomas Spoon, brother Warren Fails, son James E. Spoon, grandchildren LeKisha, Olivia, James, Alvin, Calvin. Daughter Valerie Johnson (Spoon), grandchildren Duster, Dustin, Dexter, and Denzel. She also leaves behind eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews who knew her love in ways both big and small. Beatrice’s family tree was full of branches, but the roots were strong, and she helped make them that way. She was the kind of matriarch who could remember everybody’s business, everybody’s birthday, and everybody’s appetite, often in the same breath.

Her Christian faith as a Jehovah’s Witness was a largely important part of her life, and it shaped the way she treated others. She believed in kindness, in doing right, and showing up for people when it mattered. Her faith was not loud or showy, but steady and sincere, as a testament of her love for Jehovah. She lived with the quiet confidence of someone who knew that love, prayer, and perseverance could carry a family through almost anything.

Beatrice also knew how to enjoy life, and she did not need a grand stage to do it. One of her fondest memories was a surprise 30th wedding anniversary party, a celebration that clearly understood the assignment. Family and friends alike knew how much she loved to dance with her favorite partner, Buddy, as she lovingly called him.  When those two got out there, they cut a rug like they had been rehearsing for the America’s Got Talent Show. Their hand and fancy footwork did not disappoint, and the room was always better for it. A time was had, and everybody knew it. Beatrice loved music, especially on the weekend, when she would play the HiFi while dusting and polishing the furniture. Even chores had rhythm in her house, because she knew how to turn work into a performance and still make it look effortless.  Her flair for fashion was always top tier when dressing from head to toe. She had style, timing, and grace that will make her unforgettable.

Those who knew Beatrice will remember her loving spirit, her gentle nature, and the way she made people feel welcome. She was the kind of woman who could straighten you out with a look, then feed you afterward so you would not leave offended and hungry. Her presence was a comfort, her smile was a gift, and her love was the kind that stayed with you. Beatrice Spoon’s life was a beautiful example of devotion, family, faith, and joy. She leaves behind memories that will be retold with laughter, affection, and gratitude for years to come. Though she has departed this life, the love she gave remains, and it lives on in every story, every recipe, every song, and every dance step remembered by those fortunate enough to know her.
