Bessie Lee Payne Bryant, affectionately known as Bessie to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, in Garfield Heights, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of love, commitment, and service. Born on January 3, 1938, in Demopolis, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late William and Louise Payne. Bessie's life was a testament to her strength, compassion, and unwavering faith.
After graduating from U. S. Jones High School in Demopolis, Alabama, Bessie furthered her education at Cleveland Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, where she pursued a career in nursing. She dedicated 22 years of her life to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Poly Clinic, a role that exemplified her nurturing and generous spirit.
Bessie's commitment to her faith was evident in every aspect of her life. She was baptized at Calvary Presbyterian Church and later became a charter member of New Life at Calvary after the churches merged in 2013. Her devotion to her church community was profound; she served as a Sunday School Teacher for the Adult Class, Co-Moderator of the music, worship and sacrament committee and, in 1996, took on the role of an ordained deacon. Bessie was steadfast in her religious practices, always faithful in giving her tithes and offerings.
On May 12, 1984, Bessie married the love of her life, Robert Lee Bryant, and they shared a beautiful life together until his passing. Her love extended beyond her marriage, as she made a heartfelt promise to her mother to care for her sister Eloise, ensuring she would not have to work and could be their mother's caregiver. This act of selflessness was a true reflection of Bessie's loving nature.
An avid bowler, Bessie was a member of a local bowling team and relished the camaraderie and competition. She also enjoyed playing Bid Whist with friends and family, a pastime that brought much joy and laughter to those around her.
Bessie was predeceased by her husband, Robert Bryant, and her siblings, Edward Sidney, Rose Cotman, Margaret Palmer, Sam Payne, and Eloise Payne. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Myrtis Payne, and leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will fondly remember and cherish her memory.
