Brett Michael Higgins Sr., a beacon of love, laughter, and selflessness, departed from this world on July 13, 2025, in Cooperstown, NY, succumbing to a heart attack at the age of 48. Born in Cleveland, OH, on April 9, 1977, Brett's journey was one marked by passion, perseverance, and the power of dreams. A man of exceptional talent and charisma, Brett's early years in Cleveland were the foundation of his robust spirit.
His transition to Lakeland Community College and then to Savannah State University on a full ride baseball scholarship leading the team to 46 consecutive wins was a testament to his dedication and prowess on the field. Majoring in Mass Communications, Brett's voice was as powerful as his swing, a trait that would endear him to many throughout his life. Brett's love for baseball led him to a promising start with the Seattle Mariners Minor League Team, The AquaSox, where he not only played the game but also exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork. After being released he later played for the Canton Crocodiles, The Lake County Knights, and Steve Sports. Although his path took a turn from the professional pitches to the roads of America as a CDL Truck Driver, his heart remained ever close to the diamond. Coaching baseball, Brett found a way to pass on his knowledge and love for the game, impacting young lives and fostering a sense of community. At home, Brett's life was filled with joy and affection. Stacey Higgins, his beloved wife of 20 years, was his rock and confidante.
Together, they raised two wonderful sons, Brett Jr.(18) and Jordan(14), instilling in them the values of kindness and humor that Brett himself lived by. His sister, Michelle Higgins, Step-father Ernest Higgins, Mother-in-law Cynthia Dickson (Robert) and brother-in-law, Curtis Bacon(Bernadette), along with his Aunt Georgina Smitnephews Cortique Higgins, Pharoah Culpepper(Denise), and niece Emerald Culpepper, all shared in the warm and jubilant life Brett cultivated. While Brett's physical presence has left us, his legacy endures in the hearts of those he touched. His father, Roy Michael Campbell, and mother, Marjorie Higgins, along with his Aunt Kelly Smith, may have predeceased him, but the lineage of love and laughter they passed down through Brett will forever resonate.
Brett's spirituality was not confined to a singular belief system, but rather, it was a reflection of his inclusive and open-hearted approach to life. His friends, who he considered brothers and sisters Sean McGuire, Daymian Morton, Sean Cooper, Shawn Vaughn, Vince Quinones, Ricardo Feliciano, Ellis Walker, John Morton, Demetris Gray, Hardy Amy, Glenn Hawley,Jason Wilson, Frank Wolter, Kelly Mac, Carmen Tyus, Tracy Jackson, Jennifer Simmons, Jennifer Obbish, and Jennifer Middleton were an extension of his family, and the times spent with them were filled with joy and camaraderie that transcended the ordinary. To encapsulate Brett's essence in mere words is to attempt to capture sunlight in your hands – it's the warmth, the radiance, and the life-affirming glow that he left in each interaction, each smile, and each act of kindness. Brett was a man who made every day count, who saw the best in people, and who reminded us that life, like baseball, is not just about the home runs but about showing up, giving your all, and being part of a team.
As we celebrate Brett's life, let us carry forward the laughter, the generosity, and the unyielding spirit that he embodied. In every crack of the bat, every journey on the open road, and every moment we choose kindness, Brett's legacy lives on. Let us honor him by living fully, loving deeply, and laughing often, just as he did. Brett Michael Higgins Sr., you have rounded the bases of life and touched home plate in our hearts. Your journey was a grand slam, and your memory is a treasure we will hold forever.
