Fred Rives Jr. Obituary

Fred Rives Jr., born on the 18th of January, 1937 in Whitehall, Alabama, was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew him. On the 5th of February, 2025, he passed away peacefully of natural causes in Cleveland, Ohio, having lived a life that was as rich and colorful as the photographs he loved to capture. He was the loving son of Emma and Fred Rives Sr., and the oldest brother to Sarah, Willie, Frank, Otis, Vernell, Hezekiah, and Curtis. Fred's journey took him from the southern warmth of Alabama to the bustling streets of Cleveland in 1949, where he embraced education and mastered various trades. His thirst for knowledge was only matched by his dedication to his craft, leading him to a fulfilling career at General Motors. For 37 years, he illuminated the lives of his colleagues with his skill as an electrician and his ever-present smile, retiring with not just a pension but the love and respect of all who worked alongside him.

The love story that defined much of Fred's life was his 34-year marriage to the late Mary Surratt. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Though Mary preceded him in death, the memories they shared continued to light Fred's path like the stars guide a night traveler. Not one to sit idle, Fred, affectionately known as 'Birdman' for his prowess on the golf course, lived his life with a vigor that inspired all. Whether he was running a 26-mile marathon for Ravco, bowling strikes with precision, or cycling through the streets like a man half his age, he did it with a zeal that was contagious. His love for his WII game brought out a playful spirit that kept him young at heart. Fred's passion for photography earned him the nickname 'Picture Man', a title he wore with pride. His lens captured more than images; it captured stories, emotions, and moments in time. He generously shared his talent with others, never charging for his services, because for Fred, photography was a gift from the heart, not a commodity to be sold. Travel was another of Fred's great adventures, and he traversed the globe with an insatiable appetite for new experiences. He brought back tales that would enthrall his listeners, igniting in them the desire to explore and discover. Above all, Fred was a family man.

Though he and Mary had no children, he was a cherished brother, uncle, and great-uncle. He leaves behind a legacy of love and mentorship in his niece; Jeannine, nephew; Kire, and a host of great-nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives who will miss him dearly. Fred Rives Jr. was the epitome of loving, adventurous, and wise. He lived his life not as a series of days, but as a collection of moments, each to be savored and cherished. He taught us that the measure of a man is not in the wealth he accumulates, but in the richness of his relationships and the joy he brings to others.
