Gregory Johnson, born on June 10, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Vivian 'Cookie' Johnson and Horace 'Red' Johnson, who instilled in him the virtues of intelligence, humor, and wisdom that would go on to define his character. Gregory was a cherished father, esteemed community leader, a mentor, and pillar of the Cleveland community. He passed away on February 10, 2025, at the age of 76. Gregory's journey came full circle as he departed this life in the very city that had given him so much.
A proud Vietnam Veteran, he served his country with honor and distinction. Upon returning home, Gregory pursued his passion for learning and outreach. His academic pursuits were as impressive as they were influential. After completing his master’s degree at Case Western Reserve, he further honed his intellect at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in a Minority and Native American business program business program, and then achieving a Ph.D. from Barkley University. His passion for knowledge and his dedication to bettering himself were cornerstones of both his personal and professional life.
Gregory's career was a testament to his commitment to service and leadership. He dedicated his life to healthcare administration, eventually becoming a respected figure at Mercy Hospitals in Columbus, OH. His tireless work as the Executive Vice President at the Urban League of Greater Cleveland, President of The Global Parenting Network, Director at the Ohio March of Dimes, and President at the Urban League of Pinellas County, among other roles, showcased his unwavering dedication to the welfare of others. His involvement with the United Nations Associations and his focus on leadership development were hallmarks of a man who truly sought to make a difference in the world.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Gregory's personal interests were diverse and rich. Music filled his home with joy, books adorned his shelves, golf and bowling were always on the schedule and his love for writing allowed him to express his profound thoughts and insights. Conversations with Gregory were never dull, enriched by his quick wit and the wisdom that seemed to come so naturally to him.
He leaves behind his loving daughters with Sharon Johnson; Nicole and Genine , brother Horace (Marsha), grandchildren, Jada, Milan, Ariane and London; great grandchildren, Xavior, Riley and Reign, and a host of relatives and close friends
Gregory is preceded in death by his loving wife, Theresa Mejia-Johnson, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and cherished memories. His son, G.Q. Johnson, and grandson Jamir Johnson.
Gregory Johnson touched lives near and far. He left an indelible mark on this world. His intellect, humor, and philosophical approach permeated every aspect of his life and work, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire and shape the community he held so dear.
