Janet Thompson was born on June 24, 1947, to the late Minnie Lee Van Leer (Gilmore) and Homer Theodore Van Leer Sr., both of whom preceded her in death. She peacefully transitioned from this life on March 16, 2026. Janet shared a lifelong bond with her siblings. She was preceded in death by her sister Lauretta Gudger, her brother ; Homer Theodore Van Leer Jr., and her son Tyrone Thompson Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved sister Beverly. She leaves to carry forward her legacy her children: Joe Thompson II, Dshaun Thompson, and Rovella Thompson. Her life continues through her 18 grandchildren, two of whom preceded her in death, along with a host of great-grandchildren, extended family, and loved ones. Janet attended high school in Muncie, Indiana, and later earned her degree from Cleveland State University, beginning her professional journey as a Social Worker. Her creative passion led her to Virginia Marti College, where she obtained a degree in Fashion Design.
A true fashion extraordinaire, Janet poured her artistry into designing suits, robes, hats, and wedding attire. She also created handmade dolls and pillows and restored furniture through reupholstery, leaving beauty wherever her hands worked. She nurtured young, impressionable minds through teaching art at Rainey Institute, where her patience and creativity left a lasting impression.
Janet declared her faith in Christ at a young age and remained steadfast throughout her life. She was a faithful member of Open Door Baptist Church for many years serving in the choir, as an armor bearer, and as a Sunday School teacher. She also traveled in ministry following Pastor Franklin to Inner Healing Ministries, serving over 40yrs under his leadership. Throughout her life, Janet demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming heart challenges and standing as a breast cancer survivor. She was known as a pillar in her community, remembered for her creativity, service, and enduring presence. Janet’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the beauty she created, and the faith she carried.
