Lawrence Edward Pulley was born on March 22, 1940, in Kilmichael, Mississippi, to the late William Mack Pulley Sr. and Lucille (Fair) Pulley. He was the third born of nine children (two of whom died at childbirth). His family faced humble beginnings as sharecroppers however his parents instilled in him faith in God and the importance of hard work.
