JEANNETTE GOODWIN was born on November 3, 1933, in Tallassee, Alabama to Elijah Baker and Lucy Jane Baker-Thomas, the third youngest of seven children. She and her identical twin sister Leannette were the darlings of the family and the Baker’s Corner community in Tallassee. The values instilled by their mother and uncles, Jeannette and her siblings thrived to become a dignified and proud family unit.
She received her formal education through the Elmore County Board of Education. After graduation she moved to Montgomery, AL. She was encouraged to pursue higher education and eventually enrolled in Tuskegee University, formerly known as the Tuskegee Institute, to study Vocational Training courses for a short period.
On October 22, 1951, Jeannette married Leroy Goodwin the love of her life in Montgomery, Alabama. They later moved to Cleveland, Ohio where they enjoyed 73 years of marriage.
Jeannette was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend but also career driven. On April 22, 1969, she received certification from the State of Ohio Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). In 1973, she received from the State of Ohio Department of Health endorsement for Charge Nurse position(s). She dedicated her entire career to the health care industry and worked as an LPN and Charge Nurse at Grace Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio for 40 years.
She loved life and lived it to the fullest. After retirement, Jeannette would visit the neighbors often providing homecare aid and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, traveling, shopping, dining and even taking up line dancing. But she most cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and sisters. She did not play when it came to family and demonstrated overwhelming support and dedication no matter what the circumstance.
Jeannette was also a woman of faith. A Chartered Member of the Avon Avenue Baptist Church under the dynamic leadership of the late Reverend Thomas Edison Chapman [Founder] established in 1967; she served in several ministries but her call to the Deaconess Ministry in 1984 had a great impact on her life. That call allowed her opportunities to fellowship with other women in ministry. She was a dedicated member of the Cleveland Sub-Division of Baptist Women an auxiliary of the Ohio Baptist General Convention (OBGC) where she served as Queen of the Cleveland Sub-Division of Baptist Women.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, five (5) siblings: Elijah Baker Jr., Fannie Mae Golston, Milton Baker, Lucy Mae Colman, Leannette Jones and her dear cousin Willie Mae Walden.
Jeannette leaves to cherish beautiful memories her beloved husband Leroy Goodwin Sr., Three (3) sons, Leroy Goodwin Jr. [Quintilla], Wesely E. Goodwin [Carletta], and Darrell Goodwin. Her brother, Willie Thomas. Grandchildren: Tammikka Butler [Christopher], Daemon Goodwin [Tameko], Tyre Howell [Steven], and Dominique Goodwin. Great-Grandchildren: Sasha Goodwin, Nyla DeEstrala, Sophia Howell, and Teagan Howell and a host of Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, and Friends.
