Mamie Maurice Jones, affectionally known to family and friends as “Maurice "received her wings and was called to eternal rest on July 9, 2025, at 6:40 am, to join her parents, Joseph L. Greene Sr. and Lillian Coates Greene, sister, Jeanette Ward and brother, Joseph L. Green Jr. Maurice was born in Gadsden, Alabama and lived there most of her life.
She accepted Christ at an early age at St. John CME Church and served in many capacities. Maurice was married to Sgt. William Jones, who preceded her in death. Maurice later moved to Cleveland Ohio and became a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church. Maurice began her journey as a beacon of hope and determination. Over the course of a century, she witnessed remarkable changes in the world and met each chapter of life with wisdom, grace, and a quiet strength that inspired all who knew her.
She attended Tuskegee College and Alabama A & M College. Maurice taught in the Gadsden Public School System for 34 years. During those years she motivated and encouraged many students to believe in themselves even though their life was not perfect at the time. After retirement she taught at the Gadsden Trade School. Maurice was incredibly talented. She played the piano in church, for weddings and funerals and played in the Bell Choir.
Maurice was also an ARTIST. She and her friend, Jean Presley, were the first African Americans inducted into the Gadsden Art Society. You will find most of her art hanging in her family’s homes. Maurice joined the ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Sorority in Gadsden, Alabama, and became a Life Member. Maurice loved to travel, and she took advantage of every opportunity to travel in the states and abroad. Maurice celebrated her 100th BIRTHDAY, NEW YEAR’S DAY 2025 with good wishes from across the country.
She was elated that so many people thought of her. Maurice is survived by sisters, Ruby P. Brooks and Ruth I. Williams, nieces Phyllis Jones (Robert), Alice Brooks, Andrea Burt, Cheryl Mallet, and Robbie Ruffin (Joel), nephews Otis Tuck (Myrna), Joseph Tuck (Faye), Laden Brooks, James Williams (Cheryl) and Kenneth Williams (Linda) and a multitude of great nieces and nephews, friends, and church members as well as past and present residents of Woodlands by HRC.
