Mary Ellen Smedley Brown was born April 20, 1934 to the late Sterling and Mary Lou Smedley. She attended Cleveland Public Schools, Gladstone Elementary and Kennard Junior High. Soon after graduating from school, she met and married the late A.C. Brown, and to this union the following children were born: Elaine, Faaizah, Vicky, Renee, Alden, Linell and Shawn.
As the years went by she became interested in working and applied and was employed by the Cleveland Public Schools as a cleaner first, then East Technical High School, then various other schools for a total of ten years. Her last employment position was at the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Administration Building for sixteen years in the Office of Student Assignments. She enjoyed all of her positions and was a faithful employee.
Mary was an artist and enjoyed many drawings and creations as was seen in her house. Her children Faaizah, Vicky, Al and Linell took the artistic creativeness after their mom. She was well learned in history, reading old and classic movies; she also got a kick out of her senior groups at Zelma George, Myrtis Taylor and Fairfax Recreational Centers. She belonged to the Silver Fox Club at Fairfax where she was in swim aerobic and stop aerobics.
A devout Christian she served on the Mother’s Board at Bethany Christian Church, Love Center Interdenominational Church and finally at Grace Missionary Baptist Church.
