Paul Jones Jr. was born February 28th, 1934 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to the late Paul Jones Sr. and Hattie Jones (nee Jackson). He was the only child born to this union. Shortly after Paul’s birth the family relocated to Marks, Mississippi. In search for better employment opportunities the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee and later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio when he was 10 years old.
Paul attended John Bourgh and Harmon Elementary Schools and graduated from John Hay High where he enjoyed and excelled in baseball and basketball. Paul also pitched for the minor Negro League. Although he and Lillian attended the same school they were in different social circles. Paul graduated in 1953 and was drafted into the US Army in 1954. He served for two years and received an Honorable Discharge in 1956. Paul later graduated from Fenn College with a degree in Accounting.
Shortly after, Paul and Lillian were reintroduced! He always remembered her as the petite girl with bangs and big beautiful eyes! Paul and Lillian were united in Holy Matrimony May 1957. To this union four children were born; Marie, Cathy, Gregory and Gary. Over time Paul was employed by Sherwin Williams, Case Western Reserve University as the first African American Comptroller, First Bank National Association, and retired from the City of Cleveland’s Treasury Department. Paul also dabbled in real estate as s side hustle and received his broker’s license and opened up his own company Alpine Realty.
Paul accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 14 and was baptized by Rev. Edgar Dixon in August 1948. Paul served at Holy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in various ministries such as treasurer, trustee, Sunday school teacher, Bible study instructor and Vacation Bible School Director.
Paul was known for giving nicknames to those near and dear to him! No matter where he went, he left a very impressionable mark. His love was felt. Paul was outgoing and sensitive to the needs of others but was very protective of his family; hence the nickname “Bear”. As the eldest cousin he looked after the others. Paul was a man of God and a man of his word. He was a great advisor, he was always there to lend an ear and give advice when needed. Paul was a terrific cook; he would love to sit out and grill and made the best ribs and cornbread. Paul was a wonderful friend, excellent father and an amazing husband.
On Wednesday November 27th our mighty God called Paul home to His kingdom. His memory will be cherished forever by his wife Lillian, his daughters Marie (Hobbie) and Cathy, sons Gregory (Michele) and Gary; five grandchildren, Erica (Jerry Sr.), Derek (Karen), Darryl, Demetrius (Amber) and Austin. Eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and close friends.
