Sonya Coggins was born on September 20, 1966, at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio, to the late Phillip Coggins, Sr. and Geneva Coggins (Lewis). Growing up in Warrensville Heights, she attended Warrensville Heights City Schools, where she excelled in gymnastics, earning numerous awards for her dedication and talent. After graduating from Warrensville Heights High School, Sonya continued her education at David N. Meyers Business College, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Sonya began her professional journey at Third Federal Savings and Loan, where she devoted over thirty years of service. Starting as a bank teller, she advanced through several roles, ultimately becoming a supervisor. Her colleagues admired her unwavering integrity and strong work ethic, qualities that defined her throughout her career. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Sonya served her country as a member of the Army National Guard for fifteen years, demonstrating her commitment to both her community and nation. The youngest of seven children, Sonya was affectionately known as “Nooks” or “Sonya baby” by her family, especially her siblings. She was deeply involved in ballroom dancing, rarely missing a Saturday or annual event, and enjoyed bowling and traveling. Sonya loved cooking and was renowned for hosting memorable family gatherings, particularly Christmas Eve celebrations. Her thoughtful nature always came through in the way she gave gifts and celebrated every holiday and birthday with her siblings, nieces, and nephews. A woman of deep faith, Sonya accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age at Canaan Baptist Missionary Church. She actively participated in church life, singing in the choir and serving on the junior usher board.
In 2009, she joined Faith Community Church in Maple Heights, Ohio, following her brother-in-law, Pastor Robert J. Miller. There, she continued her service as a choir member, chaired the monthly food distribution program for those in need, and was eventually ordained as a Deaconess. Sonya remained devoted to her faith and community until her passing.
Sonya leaves behind six loving siblings—William G. Riley (Myrna), Patrica Thomas, Roberta Wright, Phillip Coggins, Jr. (Laverne), Larry Coggins (Darlene), and Mary E. Miller (Robert)—as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her influence and love will continue to be felt by all who know her.
