Willy Johnson Obituary

        ~~Her Story~

Willy Bell Spruill, affectionately known as Bell or Willy, was born on June 15, 1943, in Ensley, Alabama to the proud parents of the late Willie James Spruill and Evera.  She received her education in Cleveland, Ohio where she later built a life rooted in love and family.

In April 1964, she married Ezell Johnson Jr., and together they were blessed with four children; Tyrone Spruill, Milessia “Shevelle” Johnson, Theresa Johnson, and Adrienne Johnson. Willy lived on Prince Avenue for well over 35 years.

Willy role as a grandmother was cherished deeply, as she imparted wisdom and joy to her grandchildren, Toya Golphin-Hakim (Abdul), Tonasha Cox (Wendell), Aaron Gamble, Tiauna Nobles, and Michael Cecil Jr., as well as her great grandchildren, Satorian “Tori” Golphin, Naszir “Nas” Hakim, Alfred James Gamble III, Dakota Caprice Gamble, Dekari Gamble, Tay’Lah Nelson, and Micah Cecil.  She grieved the loss of her grandson, Alfred James Gamble Jr., with grace and strength.  She honored his memory by ensuring that the legacy he left behind would always be shared by those who continue to love him.

Willy, professionally, work ethic was unparalleled.  She was a committed employee of the neighborhood store, Ward’s Food Market, until her last child was of school age. She then dedicated many years of service to the City of Cleveland as a Patient Coordinator at the Miles-Broadway Health Center and later, as a Billing Clerk for Ambulatory Services with the Department of Emergency and Medical Services (EMS).  Following years of superior work performance, she retired in May 2007.  She later relocated to Germantown, Maryland with her daughter and son-in-law before returning to the Cleveland area.

Willy’s commitment to helping others was evident in her relentless desire to be a service on behalf of those needing support, friendship or just a listening ear.  While highly respected for her professionalism, she was also admired and loved for her ability to connect with people from all levels of society.  Basically, she, with compassion for others, simply lived a life where no one was a stranger.

Willy’s Christian faith was the foundation upon which she built her life, offering strength and direction through both joys and challenges. She embraced Christ at a young age at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. In later years, she became a devoted member of Mt. Gillion Baptist Church, where she remained active and faithful until her health declined.

Willy’s interests were as varied and vibrant as her many talents.  A gifted seamstress, she delighted in crafting beautiful garments and heartfelt gifts for those she loved. Her favorite pastimes included bowling, bingo, and shopping all of which provided her with joy and social connection.  She especially cherished dining out and taking casino bus trips with her close-knit circle of friends – especially her long-time friend for well over 60 years – Ernestine Evans.  In every gathering, Willy’s infectious laughter and generous spirit lit up the room, creating cherished memories with those she held dear.

Willy Bell Johnson story is one of a life well-lived and heart-well loved.  On October 4, 2025, she peacefully concluded her earthly journey at Anna Maria of Aurora in Aurora, Ohio, embraced by the warmth of her devoted family. For 82 remarkable years, her radiant spirit and steadfast kindness enriched the lives of all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy woven with compassion and love, cherished by her loving children (4), grandchildren (4), great-grandchildren (9), nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and dedicated caregivers.
